Spring is here in Arizona and so are the flowers!  We have been talking about plants and starting to plant our seeds!  That inspired my daughter and I to start a garden!  So far we have planted Tomato seeds, Spinach seeds, and Carrot seeds.  We'll see how they turn out!  Here is a free download of a book your students can use in a writing center or whole group to go with your study of plants!  The pictures can be cut out and pasted to the book.  The pages can be copied double sided and folded to save paper.  CLICK HERE to download.

Spring/Easter Math Center Activities

I am sad that my Spring Break has flown by and we are back at school tomorrow!  The weeks leading up to Summer Break are going to be sooo long!  That is why I have made some fun Math activities to go with Spring and Easter to keep my First Graders focused on the last few units: Measurement, Geometry, and Time.  They are in color and B/W!

Henry and Mudge and a Spring Sale!!

I finally finished and posted my Henry and Mudge Math and Literacy Activities on Teachers pay Teachers!  And it is 20% off along with everything in my store right now! 
Our Henry and Mudge week was a lot of fun because my students were introduced to Book Clubs (aka Literacy Circles).  I purchased 6 Henry and Mudge chapter books from Amazon.  These books are a great intro to chapter books.  They are easy for them to read this late in the school year.  It also prepares them for what's ahead in Second Grade.  We are planning to continue our Henry and Mudge Book Clubs for the next couple of weeks following our Spring Break.  Here's how they work.

I intoduced the clubs as a whole group with Henry and Mudge: The First Book.  There are 5 jobs for the students to choose from so I picked 5 students to have a job: Characters, Setting, Main Idea, Problem, and Solution.  When we finished reading the book, we "Shared the Pen" and had the students with jobs write on the worksheet.  Then all the students answered questions about the story on an independent worksheet.  When we did our first book club with the student groups, they were able to choose from 5 different books with worksheets for each book.  They really liked it and didn't need a lot of help!

We were learning about Adjectives that compare and using words with -er and -est.  The students made their dog Mudge and compared it to another dog using words with -er and -est.

The Traps Are Set!

I am laughing right now as I type this post because my students are SOOOO into the Leprechaun that has been visiting our classroom.  I wish I had a video of the student who found the first Leprechaun mess in the class bathroom a few days ago!  I tried so hard to keep a straight face while looking surprised at the same time!  Then students kept smelling the foot prints that were left on a few desks!  Then one told me the Leprechaun has stinky feet!  (Okay, I have teary eyes from laughing so hard right now!)  Okay, I'm better! They also go hunting for Leprechaun clues outside during recess! 
The students brought in their traps today and they are all set and ready on their desks.  They turned out Super Cute!!  See for yourself!

We did some data collecting with Lucky Charms thanks to Made for First Grade!  Stop by their blog for this freebie!

We did a very fun experiment with pennies, salt, and vinegar today!  The Leprechaun sneaks in and takes the shiny pennies then leaves a note for each student!  I am leaving notes for them to find when they come to school tomorrow!  "Luring Leprechauns" is a freebie from my friend and First Grade co-worker!  CLICK HERE to download and try it with your class!

I cried when I recently learned about a mother who lost her leg saving her children from death during a tornado in their hometown.  The kids just kept telling their mother they didn't want to die and she didn't want them to be without their mother.  Those kids will always know how much their mother loves and cares for them.  As teachers, we love and cherish what we do for our students, no matter how hard the times are.
