Desert Critter Clip Art Freebie

Happy Monday everyone!  8 more days until the big "First Day of School" frenzy for me and my daughter!  She'll be starting Kindergarten this year!  Where has the time gone?
As I begin to plan ahead for the upcoming school year, I try to think of how I can implement science a little more each year.  Last year, we ended our year with some really fun "Wacky Science". This year we will plan on having our 1st annual science fair for our first graders in early May.  Yes, I try to think ahead as much as possible...HA!  This year I am planning to introduce characteristics of our Arizona desert critters with our Common Core Standards this year.
Yes, desert life has it's advantages from deer hopping our fence to eat from our Peach tree....
to those curious Javelina snooping through our garage looking for the trash cans....
And there are disadvantages like the poisonous critters from Rattlesnakes and Colorado River Toads.......

to my all time least favorite, the SCORPION!  This was a rare photo I took where both lizard and scorpion are dead.  Both unlucky I'd say!
All these critters inspired me to create a few of them as clip art and you can download them  free on my TpT store.  Enjoy!

Has the Daily 5 Got You Down?

Has the Daily 5 got you down?  Let's face it, we buy the Daily 5 book, read it thoroughly, are excited about getting it started in our class, and then discouragement because it didn't go as well as you planned.  Well, I admit I was that teacher the first time I did it in my classroom.  Each year I strive to make it better and finally decided to make some major changes to it this year.  For starters, I am getting rid of "Read to Self".  You may be saying to yourself, "Is she nuts?"  I was tired of the students being off task.  In fact, I had an administrator walk through last year and he asked the student what he was doing.  That student replied, "Hiding".  That  just embarrassed the heck out of me especially when everyone else was on task.  There's always one off tasker, right?  So, I am adding Math as part of the Daily 5 this year.  I find there isn't enough time in the day for math either so why not add it to the Daily 5?  I organize my math centers so that it is set up for 5 groups with 5 cubbies for each group.  There are 5 different games in each column which makes it easier for me to keep my games organized and easy to switch out.
Word Work is one of my favorites because I like making engaging games for the students to review learned skills.  Before they can play the games, I give them a quick worksheet they can do as a review of the spelling or phonics skills they are working on.  I know some of you may have a classroom theme this year so I added 5 new Phonics Game Sets with a Farm Theme, Pirate Theme, Space Theme, Ocean Theme, and a Dinosaur Theme to my TpT store.  Each set has 22 games with year long phonics skills that can be used for first or second grade.

I like to put the games in page protectors then store them in a 3-ring binder so the students can select the ones they want to play and be easy to store.  The students can use a clear spinner or the popular pencil and paperclip method.

Here is a FREE download with a sample of the short vowels with one vowel game for each theme.  Just click the link below.

I am still getting my room set up and will be posting about my plans for Read to Buddy and Listening as soon as I have it set up and organized!  Check back soon and have a wonderful weekend!
